plant pairs// for acne-prone skin
Real plant duos to help support skin in need.
At Maker + Merchant, we like to keep it simple with our skincare and that includes pairing plants that could support certain skin concerns. The synergistic effect of our plant pairs helps tone, hydrate, and balance skin back to its desired state- without the harsh treatments and synthetic chemicals that can further damage the skin barrier.
Plant duos are simple. They are a pairing of a Maker + Merchant hydrosol and plant-based oil, used in conjunction to support the skin’s equilibrium. After cleansing, the hydrosol is used to balance PH, impart herbal goodness, and infuse an extra dose of hydration to the skin. We follow the hydrosol with a plant-based oil to prevent moisture loss, create and barrier against elements, and supply Essential Fatty Acids. After this, you may follow with any other skincare products you find necessary: eye cream, balms, serums, etc.
Let’s explore our Plant Pairs to support healthy, hydrated + balanced skin. For when your skin is feeling angry and acne- prone…
Hydrosol: Just Rose Geranium Hydrosol. Rose Geranium Hydrosol is popular as a slightly astringent toner, and a cooling face and body mist. Rose Geranium Hydrosol also helps balance oil production and restore proper skin pH, while reducing inflammation naturally. In recent studies, Rose Geranium has been shown to have strong antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. Rose Geranium hydrosol is a gentle way to bring skin back into balance.
Oil: Just Clear Jojoba Oil. Goodbye, greasy. Jojoba Oil absorbs quickly and is good for those who tend to be oilier. Technically a wax, it’s protective for the skin. Jojoba Oil is non-comedogenic (read: doesn’t clog pores) and helps regulate sebum production. To top it off, Jojoba Oil helps restore the acid mantle which helps guard against harmful bacteria caused by skin imbalances.
Method: After cleansing, gently pat your face dry. Mist the recommended hydrosol liberally across face, neck, and décolletage until thoroughly hydrated (8-12 veils of mist). Immediately dispense a dropper-full of oil into your palm and gently warm between your hands. Press the oil over your face, neck, and chest to seal in hydration and bring balance to the skin.
What are hydrosols?
Hydrosols are an herbal distillate, sometimes known as flower waters, from the flowers, bark, stems, leaves, and fruits of plants. These aromatic waters are imbued with herbal remedies and aromas. They are much more gentle than essential oils and do not require dilution before applying the skin.
Hydrosols are an ancient and powerful way to impart the skin benefits of plants into our skin- gently. Not to mention, they often have profound effects on our limbic system. The limbic system is the area of the brain that receives and interprets the fragrance message from the olfactory nerves. Located deep inside the brain, the limbic system is the seat of emotions, creativity, sexuality, and memory. Have you ever wondered why the smell of Lavender can create an instant sense of calm? It can be linked back to Lavender’s effect on our Limbic system.
Lastly, hydrosol pH is closely matched to the skin’s pH (4.5-5.5) meaning they can support bringing the skin back into equilibrium. A balanced pH is essential to a healthy acid mantle, which promotes healthy skin barrier and protects against common skin upsets.
Why does our skin need oils?
Now that we understand hydrosols, why do we follow our hydrosol’s with an oil? Oils are full of skin-saving lipids, which are made up of fatty acids. Lipids function in our skin to help prevent moisture loss, maintain suppleness, and preserve our skin barrier.
Each plant-based oil has a unique structure, scent, and profile- which naturally makes some oils better suited to specific conditions. Some oils, like Just Coconut Oil (link) are high in saturated fatty acids, making them solid at room temperature. Other oils are high in omega-6’s, which is a helpful Essential Fatty Acid to support skin barrier function.
All oils carried by Maker + Merchant are nourishing to skin tissues and help promote healthy skin in their own unique way.
