What the heck is toning anyway? In short, toning is the step after cleansing and before moisturizing that is responsible for swiping away any last remnants of grime, bringing skin into balance, and prepping for hydration. You may remember the days swiping an alcohol-laden mixture across your upset teenage complexion with disdain, but toning has come a long way since then! Long gone are the days of zapping our skin of moisture with harsh, skin-stripping chemicals.
Enter floral waters, or hydrosols. Hydrosols are a gentle and effective post- cleanse step that have a double aromatherapy benefit. These gentle botanical waters are the product of steam or hydro-distillation of a botanical. Simply spray the hydrosol onto a cotton pad and swipe across your face and décolletage, or mist directly onto the skin via the fine mist sprayer. Your skin will receive the hydration benefits and therapeutic properties of the plant from the hydrosol, and your pores will be prepped for your next skincare step- hydration!
Because hydrosols are so gentle on the skin you can use them day or night, and even stash in your bag for quick refreshes on the go. If you are sensitive to essential oils in your skincare (like me!) hydrosols can be an excellent way to receive those plant-based, therapeutic benefits with none of the irritation of EOs. Always be sure to patch test with any new product that you are adding to your routine!
For Spring, we are recommending hydrosol staples Lemon Balm or Chamomile Hydrosol for their calming and cooling effects on the skin. Maker and Merchant's Hydrosols are distilled in the United States from organic plant materials.
